This book develops a general theory of special languages of English against a background of communication studies. It stresses the instrumental character of language, the fact that it is used for a variety of objectives together with other systems of semiotic notation.
Chapters 2-5 build a number of models to account for the different aspects of special languages, concluding with a complex definition of special languages. Chapters 6-10 develop a theory of special language speech acts of English. This produces categories of special language situations and major text forms. The subsequent detailed description of text types, syntactic and lexical peculiarities of the special languages of science and technology illustrates the linguistic features of special languages and offers guidance of a practical nature in the understanding and use of special languages. Chapter 11 attempts to define efficiency of communication on the basis of the distinctive features of special languages. The final chapter deals with standardization in special languages. A wide ranging bibliography cites most English language source material.
This book is aimed at the applied linguist, the specialist users of English as a native or foreign language, translators, teachers, interpreters, technical writers, lexicographers, terminologists and information scientists. This study attempts to provide them with a simple framework in which the English language of science and technology can be seen as a subsystem, necessitated by the processes of conceptualisation and communication of special knowledge.
